Yoga Class Testimonials

Love this place! Haven’t had a class I didn’t enjoy! Love Heidi’s gentle yoga and Belle’s vinyasa!
Antoinette Giambrocco

Great yoga class for me, challenging but not undoable. I’ve taken the Gentle Yoga and the Vinyasa Yoga classes. Heidi is very knowledgeable and personable, always asking if we have requested areas of concentration for our workouts. She offers modifications when needed and keeps an eye on our form. It can get a bit noisy with the class upstairs sometimes. I’m glad I found this class, it’s helping me in all the right ways.
Annette Mathews

Great instructors and amazing variety of classes, including yoga! Belle is an excellent instructor!

Yoga Class Frequently Asked Questions

What style of yoga classes do you offer?

We offer Gentle, Vinyasa, and Candlelight Yin Yoga Classes.

What is Vinyasa Yoga?

Vinyasa is a style of yoga that emphasizes the continuous flow of movement and breath. In Sanskrit, “vinyasa” means “to place in a special way,” and in the context of yoga, it refers to the linking of movement and breath to create a dynamic, flowing practice.

In a typical vinyasa yoga class, the teacher guides students through a sequence of yoga postures, or “asanas,” that are synchronized with the breath. Each movement is initiated by an inhalation or an exhalation, and the transitions between poses are fluid and seamless. The practice often includes sun salutations, a series of flowing movements that warm up the body and build strength and flexibility.

Vinyasa yoga can be physically challenging, but it is accessible to practitioners of all levels. The practice encourages students to focus on their breath and to move mindfully, with awareness and intention. It can also have mental and emotional benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety and improving concentration and mindfulness.

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga is a slow and gentle style of yoga that focuses on holding poses for an extended period of time, typically three to five minutes or longer. Unlike more dynamic styles of yoga like vinyasa, yin yoga involves minimal movement and instead encourages practitioners to relax into each pose, allowing gravity to deepen the stretch.

In yin yoga, the emphasis is on stretching the connective tissues in the body, such as the ligaments, tendons, and fascia, rather than the muscles. The practice often involves seated or reclined postures, and props like bolsters, blocks, and blankets are commonly used to support the body and make the poses more comfortable.

Yin yoga is known for its calming and meditative qualities, and it can be especially beneficial for people who are looking to reduce stress and tension in the body and mind. The practice can also help improve flexibility and mobility, increase circulation, and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s “rest and digest” response.

What is Gentle Yoga?

Gentle yoga is a slower-paced, more accessible style of yoga that is suitable for people of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels. The practice is characterized by its emphasis on gentle movements, deep breathing, and relaxation.

In a typical gentle yoga class, the teacher will guide students through a series of simple yoga poses, or “asanas,” that are designed to gently stretch and strengthen the body. The poses are often modified to make them more accessible and comfortable for beginners, older adults, or people with physical limitations or injuries. Props such as blankets, blocks, and bolsters may also be used to support the body in the poses.

Gentle yoga classes often begin with a few minutes of breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, such as guided meditation or visualization, to help students calm their minds and reduce stress and anxiety. The pace of the class is slow and steady, with an emphasis on moving mindfully and listening to the body’s needs.

Gentle yoga can be a great option for people who are new to yoga or who are looking for a more restorative and relaxing practice. It can help improve flexibility, balance, and strength, as well as reduce pain, stiffness, and tension in the body. It can also have mental and emotional benefits, such as improving mood, reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting a sense of calm and well-being.

Can pregnant women do Yoga?

Yes, in most cases, pregnant women can safely do yoga with proper modifications and precautions. However, it is important for pregnant women to consult with their healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program, including yoga, to ensure that it is safe for them and their baby.

Can I do Yoga if I'm not flexible?

Absolutely! In fact, yoga can be a great way to improve flexibility and mobility, regardless of your starting point. It’s a common misconception that you need to be flexible to practice yoga – in reality, yoga is a practice that can help you become more flexible over time.

Many yoga poses can be modified or adapted to accommodate different levels of flexibility and mobility. Props like blocks, straps, and blankets can also be used to support the body and make the poses more accessible. A skilled yoga teacher will be able to offer modifications and variations that suit your individual needs and help you progress safely and gradually.

It’s important to remember that yoga is not a competition or a performance – it’s a practice that is focused on cultivating awareness, self-compassion, and inner peace. The most important thing is to listen to your body and honor its limitations, without pushing too hard or forcing yourself into poses that are uncomfortable or painful. With patience, consistency, and the guidance of a qualified teacher, you can gradually develop greater flexibility and mobility in your body, as well as other physical, mental, and emotional benefits that come with a regular yoga practice.

Can I do Yoga if I'm not in good shape?

Absolutelty! Yoga is a versatile practice that can be customized to fit individuals of all fitness levels. This includes individuals who are new to exercise or those who aren’t in the best physical shape. Yoga can be a great starting point for those looking to get in shape, as it offers a low-impact way to enhance strength, flexibility, and balance. Various yoga poses can be adapted to match different fitness and mobility levels, and props can be used to provide support and make poses more accessible.

It’s advisable to begin with a beginner-level or gentle yoga class if you’re new to yoga or have any health concerns. Before starting any new exercise program, it’s also a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider.

It’s crucial to remember that yoga is not about competition or performance, but rather a practice that is focused on building self-awareness, self-care, and inner peace. The most important thing is to be mindful of your body, respect its limitations, and avoid pushing yourself too hard or comparing yourself to others. With patience, consistency, and the guidance of a qualified teacher, you can gradually develop strength, flexibility, and confidence in your practice and body.
