Summer Body Prep: Your Comprehensive Workout Plan
As a Pilates instructor, I’m excited to share with you my tips for prepping your body for the summer. Whether you are hitting the beach, rehabbing an injury or just want to feel your best, these steps will help you get there. Let’s dive in!
Hydration Tips
Staying hydrated is crucial. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. While tap water is great, you can switch things up to keep it interesting:
Coconut water
Kombucha
Sparkling water
Decaf iced tea or coffee
Add lemon, lime or frozen fruit “ice cubes” to your tap water
Cow’s milk
Fruit juice (4 oz is 1 serving BTW)
Smoothies (keep it healthy)
Exercise Routine
As summer approaches, now is the ideal time to get in shape. Our Summer Body Prep plan includes a mix of mat, reformer, and strength-building classes designed to deliver optimal results. To enhance muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, and especially core strength, follow this weekly routine:
Pilates Spring Equipment Class: (Reformer, Tower, Chair) 1-2 sessions/week to engage your muscles and improve strength, stability, balance and coordination
Mat Pilates Class: 1-2 sessions/week to build core strength and mobility.
Weight Training Class: 1-2 sessions/week to increase muscle strength and endurance.
Cardio: Mix in some heart and lung exercise by heading outside for a brisk walk or hike. Aim for at least 20 minutes + daily. It’s a great way to get your blood pumping and enjoy the summer weather!
Nutrition
Focus on nutrient-dense foods. Before eating anything, ask yourself:
“Is this nutrient-dense?” Lean proteins, produce, whole grains, good fats
“Is this empty calories?” Fatty proteins, processed foods, sugary desserts
If it’s the latter, skip it and choose something that will nourish your body instead.

June’s Instructor Profile with Marisa Farrah
I started Pilates with Katie at Personal Pilates Plus after hip surgery in 2010. My physical therapist recommended it to continue my rehab from the surgery. I found that I loved the practice so much beyond just injury rehab and decided to continue.
Pilates has helped me become more aligned in my spine and hips. It has strengthened my core and increased my overall body awareness. I integrate the practice into my everyday life, which helps me move more functionally, protect my joints, and focus on my posture.
When I practice Pilates, it’s a time for me to concentrate on myself and not think about everything else going on in my life. I can focus on my breath and understand which muscles should be engaged and which need to relax, making it a very meditative practice for me.
I find that regular practice improves my performance in all areas of my life. I like to encourage students to pay attention to their bodies before and after class so they can feel the difference in their mind and body and understand how Pilates benefits them. I don’t think there is any other kind of exercise that is so focused and targeted while providing the same benefits that Pilates does.

My Journey with Pilates and Katie Thornhil by Mary Jo Smith
I wasn’t particularly goal-oriented when I joined Personal Pilates Plus; I just knew I needed to
make a difference in my body. I experienced too much discomfort and was desperately
searching for a change. My Pilates experience with Katie Thornhill has been incredibly positive,
and I would not hesitate to recommend her or Pilates as a primary exercise.
I started Pilates 20 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made for myself. After a car
accident that left me in a body cast for three months, I tried many different exercise programs
alongside physical therapy, but I still experienced the same nagging back problems. I read
about Pilates and wondered if it could help me.
One evening, on my way home from work, I saw the Personal Pilates Plus sign on West 44th
Ave. (Our new location is 5716 Ammons St, Arvada). I decided to check it out and see what it was about. This led to my introduction to Katie Thornhill, the owner and personal trainer. From that very first meeting, I was encouraged by Katie’s belief that it was possible to address my back issues. She not only helped me with day-to-day activities, but I no longer feel the need for any other back pain assistance (chiropractic care, etc). Katie’s knowledge of anatomy is so impressive that any incorrect posture or position is corrected immediately. As I share this acknowledgment about Pilates and Katie, I want to conclude by saying this: Pilates and Katie are heroes for me and the best thing I have ever done for myself. If you’re thinking about starting a Pilates practice, my advice is to go for it. It could be life-changing.
